OpenXAdES FAQ

General questions

What is DigiDoc and how is it related to OpenXAdES?

DigiDoc was the original name of this project in 2002, and is still present in the format, libraries and end-user applications. We have introduced the OpenXAdES name to better demonstrate our commitment to standards and open systems. Eventually, the format name and library contents will probably be renamed to OpenXAdES, but end user application names will remain the same (DigiDoc Client, DigiDoc portal), as it is more understandable to regular users. Therefore, for completeness you may refer to this project either just as OpenXAdES, or OpenXAdES/DigiDoc.

How compatible is OpenXAdES with the XAdES specification?

OpenXAdES is fully compatible with XAdES base specification and includes all mandatory elements. The XAdES standard also specifies a number of extended profiles, such as XAdES-C, XAdES-T etc. OpenXAdES includes elements from the extended profiles, but is not explicitly compatible with any of them - it is another extended profile that is currently not present in the standards spec. We felt that creating our own profile would be the best way to achieve our goals of self-contained document and lightweight, standards-based implementation. Our goal is to have the OpenXAdES spec recognized as yet another profile of XAdES.
